The Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago

4.8
Developed from a free art school and gallery started in the 1860s, The Art Institute of Chicago now holds a permanent collection of more than 300,000 artworks. One of its most beloved paintings is George Seurat's Pointillism masterpiece "A Sunday on La Grande Jatte." Exhibits spread over eight buildings include Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art, with additional holdings of Old Masters, European and American decorative arts, and industrial and graphic design. Highlights include paintings by American artists Grant Wood and Edward Hopper, as well as Monet, Renoir, Cezanne, Matisse, van Gogh, and Picasso. The main building itself counts among the city's major landmarks, featuring two bronze lions guarding its main entrance. Check the online calendar for special events and temporary exhibits, which often require separate time-stamped tickets. Save time by purchasing your tickets in advance. Because the museum covers so much ground, it helps to map out exhibits you particularly want to see before you start exploring. • Very nice building and great art collection. Bring a sweater or light jacket, it does get cold in some parts with the A/C on in summer. Plenty of seating areas and wheel chair accessible. It's easy to...  more »

  • This art museum is huge! And there’s so much great art that can be seen. Good cafes as well for lunch or a coffee break. I would have given 5 stars if it weren’t for the ticketing guy who was rude. Also, they should have a good deal where tourists could have a 2-day ticket because you literally won’t be able to see everything in just one day! I still enjoyed it.
  • My trip so far has covered quite a fair bit of art museum around the major cities. One of the most famous Art museum in the world is the Art Institute of Chicago. I have read a numerous of good review on this museum and I have set the standard to compared it against Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. In my opinion, this museum is the greatest as it combine both old and modern art under one roof. The interior were well structured as well and the arts were arranged properly according to the theme with proper description. The lightning is good as well. The art museum is huge and be prepared to spend at least half day here. The Art Institute has one of the world's most notable collections of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art in its permanent collection. Besides that, in 2009, the museum opened the Modern Wing which includes several works from Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse.
  • I did not have enough time to see everything at this enormous museum. I've had mixed experiences with the special exhibits before, but the core museum is tremendous. I particularly like the American Wing, and Impressionist art, and the European paintings (specifically the Italian renaissance and German Romantic works). The price was absolutely worth it, and there was a nice courtyard cafe to unwind in the middle of the museum. I love Chicago museums, and the Art Institute is right at the top of my favorite places. Worth an entire day. (Also, they have affordable pocket guides and a larger essential works guide that are super high quality).
  • The Charles White Exhibit is amazing! There are quite a few other exhibits that are also highly interesting, and there are a few others that I'd personally pass on. The staff members that I encountered were very friendly and helpful. Some went beyond measure in answering a few questions. I do recommend visiting, and Thursdays are free days. The crowd wasn't too bad, but I do suggest getting there before five or after six. The ticket process was a speedy one so that was also appreciated.
  • The Art Institute of Chicago deserves volumes to describe it. I shall try to be concise. Although almost anything can be considered art, once you pass through the amusing modern and contemporary displays and venture into the older and diverse cultural areas, one can gain a sense of the culture and history of that particular region. You also gain insight into the way mankind thought in the past. There are relics and art pieces that date back before Christ. The galleries in the architecturallyl older area are the most exceptional and interesting.
