An important part of Charleston's history, Old Slave Mart Museum represents one of the few remaining buildings once used for securing slave labor. Constructed in 1859, this antebellum auction gallery originally formed part of a much larger slave market taking up an enclosed lot between two major streets. Established by a local sheriff after a ban on public slave auctions, the private market operated until the Union forces occupied Charleston and closed the operation in 1865. Placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975, the building now offers visitors a chance to learn about the city's role in the inter-state slave trade through a presentation of individual slave sales that took place here. • As a museum this place leaves a lot to be desired. It doesn't have a lot of artifacts, is small, doesn't allow photography, isn't interactive, is small and doesn't have guided tours. All of that...  more »

  • If I did not do anything else on this trip the museum made the entire trip worth it. I was sad, angry and enlightened all at the same time. The gentleman who runs the place gave us so much insight and additional knowledge. The best part is my son's ❤️ learned a lot as well. The place is small but jam packed with a lot of stuff!
  • A wonderful place to take in some knowledge and understanding of some of America's history. George Washington actually stood in one of the rooms that you tour. A wonderful learning opportunity for young and old alike. Beautiful architecture though it is a bit pricey.
