Flea Market · Landmark
Established in the 1790s, Charleston City Market is one of the country's oldest public markets and hosts more than 300 entrepreneurs. Begin your visit at the historic market hall, an impressive Greek Revival-style structure built 1841. Admire its brownstone stucco and green ironwork before shopping for souvenirs and treats. Items with the Certified Authentic Handmade in Charleston seal are entirely locally made. Market stalls extend four city blocks away from the hall and include an array of goods. You'll find about 50 artists with sweetgrass baskets, a traditional African-American craft. These tightly woven baskets have been made for centuries and are a popular--and useful--souvenir. • Since we were tourists from the north, we were expecting there to be fresh local produce at this market. However, there was none to be found. Plenty of souvenir type stuff and very little food of any....  more »
  • Beautiful day not too crowed. But market enclosed. Looked dingy from outside. Masked required, so no thanks  more »

  • We weren't sure what to expect after visiting the city market in Savannah which was small and quite different in atmosphere than Charleston. We were pleasantly surprised and walked this market several times buying a few gifts and souvenirs. Tons of local art and gift items (some places sold items made in China..... Why would you buy anything made in China with so much locally made items and talent?!) Definitely a highlight of our stay in Charleston.
  • We visited and had a wonderful time as a family. We took a carriage ride tour. Troy, at Palmetto Carriage Tours, was great. We loved walking around the market and seeing all the local vendors. Especially Amelia who does henna. Her artistry is simply amazing. We can't wait to go back.
