Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist, Charleston

A showcase of neo-Gothic architecture from the antebellum and Civil War periods, Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist also serves as the city's primary Catholic church. Originally constructed in 1854 and later destroyed, the church finally reopened in 1907 after undergoing a long period of restoration and recovery. Visit the building and admire its intricate brownstone construction, complete with stained-glass windows and a 51 m (167 ft) tall main spire. Wander inside and explore the vaulted interior, where you'll find decorative molding, ornate wood carvings, and a sizeable pipe organ. Be sure to check the church's online schedule if you're interested in attending a daily mass or other event. • We didn't have the opportunity to get inside due to COVID-19, but we wondered around it outside, and really loved its architectural design!  more »
  • After a morning of sightseeing it was a restful place to sit & be surrounded by peaceful beauty of stained glass windows, candles flickering, & a sense of God’s presence.  more »

  • The Cathedral is a magnificent church. The interior's stained glass windows, the stone floors and the beautiful pews and wood work mark this gem as a must see in Charleston. Upon entering the sense of peace is immediate and you may feel the presence of God. It is one of the most lovely churches in Charleston. Also visit the Diocese chapel on Orange Grove Road in West Ashley.
  • Went to mass several years ago. It was very beautiful service. The choir was awesome. The only thing is that we had to park a couple of blocks away and walk. We walked past yesterday but didn't have time to go inside. It's a very beautiful church.
