A natural amphitheater, the rim of Cedar Breaks National Monument Visitor Center rises 3,000 m (10,000 ft) above sea level. Shale, limestone, and sandstone--alternating stripes of orange, gold, white, and brown--run from the rim to the canyon floor. Local Native American tribes called this the Circle of Painted Cliffs. The amphitheater floor is covered with spires, walls, crevices, and cliffs that settlers called "breaks" or "badlands." The rim makes a great spot for hiking and photos. Cedar Breaks National Monument Visitor Center reviews
Easily accessible in summer for great views of red rocks. Even more impressive in winter (if the road is open) due to the contrast of red rock and snow. more »
Cedar Breaks National Monument is a nice hideout from the crowds and the summer heat that you’ll experience at nearby Zion National Park. Located at 10,350 feet elevation, summer temperatures are low.... more »
Staff and volunteers were great. Went to the star party and loved the instructive lectures given by the rangers. There were telescopes we could look through and the stars are so much clearer and beautiful in a dark sky. I wish the signage to get there was a little better. We got lousy for a minute. If you go to the star party, wear long pants and take a coat. It gets cold after dark.
You can't find a more beautiful place in the lower 48. Unique geology and views forever, great hikes, AMAZING sunsets, nicely varied (mountains, forests, water (ponds)). Not expensive to enter. They have guided walks, astronomy nights with telescopes, occasional solar viewing. Grwat flowers in late June- 1st part of July, and some throughout the summer. Also important - many places to park, not crowded, and small enough that you can visit in a day or a few hours. Even simply driving on the main road and visiting just a couple of viewpoints is fantastic.
