Landsford Canal State Park, Catawba

State Park · Park
Landsford Canal State Park is a South Carolina state park in Chester County, two miles (3.2 km) from US 21. The 448-acre (1.81 km2) park contains the ruins of the Landsford Canal built using slave labor to bypass rapids on the Catawba River between 1820 and 1825. The coming of the railroad caused the canal to be abandoned. The former lock keeper's house contains an interpretive museum. In addition to the canal, visitors also can see one of the largest remaining stands of Hymenocallis coronaria, the Shoals spider-lily, that grows in the shoals of the river and blooms from mid-May to mid-June. The park offers hiking, picnicking, boating, and fishing, as well as a playground.

  • If you like to canoe this looks like a good place to do so. But I went to hike the trails, to see the famous spider lily, and to see the remains of the canal. Signage was not great, but between the....  more »
  • I love going here for an afternoon walk. You can walk down to the river and play in the water, or dip your feet in to cool off. The trail is clear and covered in gravel. You can easily bring a stroller down the trail. There are a few educational stops alomg the way to learn about the history. There is a small fee to enter the park, which goes up around may due to the blooming lollies, which are beautiful! You can go on the website and purchase a pass though that will save you money if you live in the area and plan to visit often.
  • This place is great. You can take nice walks through their trails (2 in the same direction). There are quite a few interesting historical structures that have been preserved that are a wonder to see. It is not overly busy, other than during Lily season, so it's a great place to go and relax. There is a free to enter unless you have the SC state park pass
