Julian Price Memorial Park is a park of 4200acre at the foot of Grandfather Mountain in North Carolina, named in honor of Julian Price. It is at milepost 297 on the Blue Ridge Parkway and directly adjacent to the Moses H. Cone Memorial Park. Together these parks comprise the largest developed area set aside for public recreation on the Parkway. The park is managed by the National Park Service which received the lands from the Jefferson Pilot Standard Life Insurance Company shortly after Price's death when they received it through his will. The grounds are also known for the fact that the nation's largest National Lumberjack Association rally is held here annually.
Price was an insurance executive who purchased the acreage in the late 1930s and 1940s to create a retreat for the employees of his insurance company. His premature death in 1946 postponed these plans and the lands were deeded over to his company. They in turn donated the lands to the National Park Service / Blue Ridge Parkway for public recreational use with the cooperation and approval of Price's son and daughter.
The donor of the lands requested that Boone Fork be dammed to create a lake in Julian Prices' honor, which is now called Price Lake. The Blue Ridge Parkway goes over the top of the dam. The 47acre lake is visible from the road and is stocked with various fish. Among wildlife around the man-made lake are beavers, ducks, and frogs.

  • We had a cool, lovely morning kayaking the two miles along the edge of Price Lake. We took our own kayak and could put into the lake from the parking lot, but it would be a lot easier to just rent a....  more »

  • Julian Price Memorial Park has been one of my favorite places for many years. The park has a campground with rustic campsites that do not have water and power hook ups, however each site has a fire ring, picnic table, and tent pad. I prefer the lakeside sites. There are two good hiking trails within the park. The Price Lake Trail is an easy trail for most hikers of all ages. It is roughly two miles long and goes all around the lake. There are several areas that can be used for a picnic with views of the lake. The Boone Fork Trail which has it's starting point at the rest area is a little over five miles long. This trail is a little more challenging than the lake trail, however hikers of various ages and abilities enjoy this five mile loop trail. This park is a wonderful part of the Blue Ridge Parkway. It does get a bit crowded on the weekends especially in the summer and fall. I have visited the park in all seasons and can honestly say that there is not a bad time of year to go.
  • I love this area. Beautiful, clean lake. Great place to take the kayaks or go fishing. I love exploring the coves and seeing the wildlife. Perfect for the whole family or as a trip alone to get away. They offer overnight camping spots and they have canoe and kayak rentals. The trails around the lake are well maintained, great area to hike in. Easy trails.
