Must see · Zoo · Zoo / Aquarium
Spread out across 810 hectares (2,000 acres), North Carolina Zoo is the largest walk-through zoo in the world. More than 1,600 animals from more than 250 species, split into an Africa and North America section, live here. The African habitat houses such creatures as ostriches, elephants, gorillas, and lemurs, while the North American part hosts alligators, bears, sea lions, the largest collection of Alaskan seabirds in the country, and much more. Don't miss the critically acclaimed aviary, with free-flying birds in tropical rainforest conditions. The zoo makes getting around easy, thanks to 8 km (5 mi) of walking paths, as well as trams and air-conditioned buses. Lines for the trams and buses can be long, so wear comfortable shoes. • This was much more than a hike through this Zoo. We walked for 3 1/2 hours to see very few animals but lots of bushes, trees and flowers. Thank goodness there were ramps for those who needed them...  more »
  • I am giving this place three stars because it is a very nice place & the animals are in pretty good conditions & the habitats are nice. However, this is NOT a Zoo! I am not sure if any other Zoo is...  more »
  • My family and I really enjoyed this experience. All parts were fun, exciting, and amazing. My two young children where bright eyed with wonder at the different and amazing animals that were on display. Unfortunately on our trip the giraffes were being love bugs, so we didn't get to experience that.which is fine , cause animals will be animals. (it just means we will have to go back :) Which is certainly okay with us ) The only thing that makes me give four stars instead of five, is that we spent a lot of money (per person, including the children) to take a behind the scenes tour. While I understand the staff has no control of other peoples children, there were children that where unruly and not following the instructions of staff. This made it difficult for my family to sit together. Separating us from enjoying the ride as a family. As well as my elderly grandmother was hurt in the process from the children jumping from seat to seat after the ride was over. requiring us to ask for golf cart assistance to get back to the main gate. Maybe next time they can limit the amount of children per adult or address that children need to sit with their adult or just address the unruly children and lack of care themselves. Other than that it was a great experience and we will definitely be back in the future.
  • North Carolina is lucky to have such an amazing zoo! It has such beautiful landscapes! There is a lot of shade on the walking paths and the tram/shuttle service within the park is nice! The bathrooms are clean and they even have a nursing area at both the Africa and North America entrances! The animals are well taken care of and have so much room to roam! We went at the end of October and all of the animals were active! It is a must see if you live in NC or if you are visiting!
