A symbol of the gratitude of the American people for every Marine who has given his or her life to defend the United States, U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial is also known as the Iwo Jima Memorial because of its famous statue. The memorial's statue depicts the raising of the American flag on Iwo Jima in 1945, a victorious image that has great resonance in the country. Sculptor Felix W. de Weldon used the original image, a Pulitzer Prize-winning photograph by Joe Rosenthal, to create this statue. Weldon also arranged for three survivors of the flag raising to pose for his sculpture, which was officially unveiled in 1954. I rode from Los Angeles to Washington DC to see this memorial and a few others. Really spectacular and worth the trip. Amazingly both beautiful and peaceful. We came at night and no one was there except us. It was really special. It was a great time to remember those who I served with and pay my respects to all of the Marines who have served and fallen. One of the big highlights of my motorcycle journey across the beautiful United States of America.
The War Memorial is dedicated to all U.S. Marine Corps personnel who died in the defense of the United States since 1775. Very important and iconic memorial to visit. There is plenty of space to walk and it’s close to Arlington National Cemetery. FYI: it has a “city bike” station if you want to rent/return yours.
