Follow the development of the United States' missile programs at White Sands Missle Range Museum, site of the first atomic bomb test and today home to a collection of historical missile models. Explore the museum's collection of indoor exhibits featuring missile motors, important technology, tools used in the construction process, and more. Don't miss the section detailing the many scientists and engineers who helped make these programs a reality. Afterward, head outside to view the extensive display of missiles once tested here. Keep in mind that the range is still an active military facility and you'll need a security pass to enter. This requires presenting your driver's license and, if coming by car, vehicle registration. I flew out from Atlanta although I live in Dothan Alabama but I met my granddaughter at airport and flew with her to my sons who is her dad. OMG I absolutely fell in love with New Mexico. The white sands was awesome.
I was stationed at Bristol, RI in 1965-66 at the Nike Hercules Missile Base and in 1965 we were appointed to go to the White Sands Missile Range and fire a missile. When we arrived there we were told we would do the first night firing of a Nike Hercules Missile at White Sands. I would loved to have seen it but I was in the radar van and missed it. We did see other Missile Battalions fire their Missile during the daytime. What a great experience!
