At National Railway Museum, learn about the history of trains and their effect on British society. This engaging museum, which won the European Museum of the Year Award in 2001, houses 100 locomotives and almost 200 items of rolling stock that either ran on British rails or that British manufacturers produced. Wander through the massive halls and board all types of trains, from the opulent Royal Train to a futuristic Japanese bullet train. Observe engineers working at their craft in the workshop and take a ride on the miniature railway outside. Guides are available to give children a fun education on Britain's rail history. What an amazing place and totally free. You can make a donation to the museum upon arrival. Kids loved seeing the trains close up. Amazing how advanced the steam trains actually we're at the time. Guides can provide amazing insight on how the steam engines work. Lots of interactive displays and a wealth of information for anyone interested in steam engines. Great to actually see the flying Scotsman and some other truly beautiful engine's. Engineering at its best.
Fantastic day out with tons to do. My daughter had a great time. Entry is free with a suggested donation and there are a few things to do which cost a few pounds but are worth it, especially the mini railway ride, which was great fun and my daughter received a Thomas the Tank Engine book at the end (as seen in the picture). If you don't want to pay for the rides, there's still plenty to see and do, including a story time inside a train cart for the kids. Staff were all very friendly and there were picnic spaces for those not wanting to use the cafe. Would definitely recommend for anyone wanting a cheap but fun filled day out.
