Despite its unimposing exterior appearance, Holy Trinity Church boasts a rich history dating back to the 11th century. Benedictine monks from Normandy established a priory on this spot in 1089, replacing with their own structure an older Saxon church. The current building dates mostly from the 15th century and stands in a secluded churchyard near one of York's busy shopping streets. To reach the atmospheric old church, pass through an 18th-century archway that once housed local artisans' workshops. Once inside, take a close look at the eastern windows, which feature exquisite stained-glass from the 1470s. Holy Trinity Church Reviews
We were recommended to visit the church by local people we met in a restaurant and it was certainly worthwhile. The church is a very tranquil place despite being in the middle of a bustling city. The ... more »
Pretty little church that I ate my lunch at (outside there are benches and grass). Nice old wood in the church, some stained glass. Nice. more »
Fantastic place to view. You can feel the history. I’m not a church goer so I didn’t visit for that but was drawn in to see this fantastic authentic old church. Definitely worth a visit. Ring the bell when your there. The sound from it is awesome.
It took me a while to find this church which is well hidden behind a row of very old shops on busy Goodramgate. Entering it was like stepping back in time. The church has no electricity so is lit by candles and the stone floor is very uneven. Some beautiful stained glass windows that let in some light and unusual box pews. The volunteers who look after it were very welcoming. The churchyard is a lovely place to sit, so tranquil and secluded with the towers of the Minster rising up behind.
