Church of Saint Mary, Whitby, Whitby

#3 of 7 in Historic Sites in Whitby
Church · Hidden Gem · Tourist Spot
The spooky, cliffside graveyard with its rows of crooked grey tombstones brought Church of Saint Mary, Whitby fame as the setting in Bram Stoker's Dracula novel. This Anglican parish church looms hilltop over the river and town below, a staggering 199 steep steps up from the town. The church was first founded in 1110 of Norman architecture with a fortress-like exterior, but the interior dates to the 18th and 19th centuries, with a three-story pulpit and box-style pews, some inscribed with "For Stranger Only." The interior features a variety of styles and decor, including one of the most complete sets of pre-Victorian furnishings in England. • We loved visiting this church near the abbey. So gothic. As are the surrounding grave stones etc. You can really imagine it all being in the novel. And a religious reverence is present.  more »
  • A sense of calm and inquisitive takes over as one walk around all but a few of the now anonymous headstones. The views across Whitby town and harbour cannot be surpassed.  more »

  • Loved it. Lovely man with Daphney the hound dog gave us a very interesting chat re the history of the Church. Especially loved the tale of the 4 hour sermons necessitating the use of a commode in the pews😏
  • Beautiful old church with too many features to mention. It's a not to be missed location next to the Abbey ruins. Open Top bus or 199 stone steps from the town.
