Trentham Gardens, Stoke-on-Trent

Must see · Garden · Nature / Park
A major restoration project gives Trentham Gardens the feeling of England's golden years. The Italianate garden's sculpted bushes, grasses, and flowers make angles along walking trails over an expansive patch of land. Take a walk through the gardens toward the woodlands, where over 140 Barbary macaques watch you from the trees. You won't find fences or pens keeping the monkeys away from the visitors, but wardens are on the watch to ensure your safety. Very little of Trentham Hall still stands, having been razed by its owner, the 4th Duke of Sutherland, in 1912 after the nearby town turned down his offer of the estate. However, on a ride in the Giant Observation Wheel, which gives you a bird's-eye view, you'll see the outline of the former hall. You'll also see the Trentham Ballroom where huge acts, including Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd, took the stage in the 1970s. • Pleasant Italian gardens with a number of interesting sculptures dotted around. Enjoyable and not too long a walk around the lake. Refreshment hut half way around for a welcome cuppa or ice lolly! Children's play area is great for younger kids and older ones too. Lots of places to sit and ponder and to take in the atmosphere. Much improved since I was a child. Would go again!
  • Lots of open space and walks both inside and outside the gardens. Allotment garden was the best. Walk around lake very pleasant on a lovely day. Cakes looked nice but I had a fruit scone. They brought out a sachet of strawberry jam.....standards! Good playground for kids and lots of open space for burning off the energy! Little cafe at the end of the lake was cute. Idyllic and relaxing....worth the tenner.
