#4 of 8 in Museums in Keswick
Threlkeld Quarry and Mining Museum is a unique attraction in the Lake District which gives visitors an insight into Lakeland's industrial past.

Two indoor display rooms highlight the links between geology, quarrying and the 400 year history of metal ore mining.

A guided tour of our replica mine can enhance the experience and give you an insight into the world of the early miners.

We have a narrow gauge (2ft) passenger carrying railway which takes visitors into the quarry with views of some of the vintage excavators on the site.

We run 'Sir Tom' our Bagnall 0-4-0 saddleback locomotive in school holidays and for events. At other times a diesel loco is used. Please check our website for details.

Come and enjoy our fantastic views of Blencathra, whatever the weather.

Come and try your hand at panning for minerals in the stream.

The Museum is also the home of the Vintage Excavator Trust. There are demonstration weekends are held over the 3rd complete weekend of May and September.

We are open 10.00 -17.00 every day from Easter until the end of half term week at the end of October/beginning of November.

Trains are diesel hauled out of school holidays and run at 11.00,13.00 and 15.00.

School holidays the trains are steam hauled and run on the hour from 11.00 -16.00.

Mine tours are scheduled for 11.30, 13.30 and 15.30

  • It's the simple things! We (mum, dad & two daughters - 8 &10) went in the August rain and like others have said it would definitely be better in the dry. Despite the pouring rain we then spent over an hour panning the stream for gem stones. Got soaked to the core but had a great time, such a simple thing but so enjoyable!
  • A lovely little museum, we spent a lot of time panning for minerals in the beck. Best fun for a nine year old - and all at ridiculously low prices. The staff are lovely, a relaxing day out and very child friendly.
