Tewkesbury Abbey, Tewkesbury

4.8
A former Benedictine monastery with the largest Romanesque crossing tower in all of Europe, Tewkesbury Abbey is the second largest parish church in the country. Of the church’s three spectacular organs, the most notable is the Milton Organ installed in the 18th century, while the most practical is the Elliot chamber organ of 1812, mounted on a movable platform. Attend a morning service to listen to the acoustics and enjoy a parish breakfast following the ceremony. Photography is restricted in the abbey. • Although the abbey was founded in 1087, the construction began only 1102 and the Norman Abbey was ready in 1121 to accommodate the Benedictine monks. In The course of the centuries there has been built and changed. Inside see the beautiful stained glass windows, the very beautiful ornate ceiling of the nave and the side chapels. Upon entering the abbey, a large mirror is located at the middle path on a table. With this you can see nicely the decorated ceiling and on the other side it is enlarged. It is really a very nice church which you can view for free.

  • Beautiful architecture, fascinating history, wonderfully welcoming people. It's even dog friendly (the lovely ladies in the shop gave our little Jack Russell some treats). Absolutely well worth visiting, and The Bell opposite does great food (and is very dog friendly).
  • Steeped in history. Beautiful stained glass windows. Plenty of people around with information about the building. Free entry just a donation for upkeep. Shop inside selling momentous etc.. Small cafe in the grounds. Worth a visit.
