National Glass Centre at the University of Sunderland is a cultural attraction and venue with a difference. With glass at the heart of everything we do, we celebrate Sunderland’s glass making heritage and explore the creative potential of this extraordinary material.

Discover the origins, growth and legacy of glass making in Sunderland with our permanent exhibition, Stories of Glass in Sunderland. Using compelling personal stories from local people and striking audio visual displays, this interactive exhibition traces the history of glass making in the City from the 7th Century to the present day.

Our newly renovated gallery spaces host our international exhibitions programme, which presents the work of leading contemporary artists in glass and ceramics.

If you are looking for an unusual creative experience you’ll love our One-to-One Glass Blowing Experiences and our range of glass making, jewellery and craft classes. We also run a variety of fun, hands on workshops for children and young people.

Our popular, free glass blowing demonstrations run throughout the day and families can explore our exhibition spaces with themed tours and treasure hunts and play on our iconic glass roof.

For a bite to eat with a view, try National Glass Centre Brasserie, which serves delicious, locally sourced meals by the riverside.

Complete your visit with a browse in our Shop and choose the perfect souvenir for your day out from our selection of beautiful glass and ceramic artworks and jewellery, hand-crafted by local artists.

  • This is such an amazing place to go. They have various exhibitions with incredible work on show and you can sit and watch glass being made. You are able to book in and learn how to make glass yourself, something I am yet to do. The whole centre is brilliantly laid out and accessibility is superb. If you're around the area, I highly recommend the National Glass Centre to be included on your things to see list. While you're there, call into the shop and pick yourself a glass trinket up to take with you, they're fantastic!
  • Excellent practical educational fun. Took the grandkids last week and they made some sand-cast ornaments (with expert help). Collected them this week and stayed to watch a fascinating demonstration of how to make the bottle for the ship to go into. They have s marvellous, if small, museum display and a well stocked shop (prices, in the maim, reasonable).
