Barnes Park, Sunderland

3.8
#5 of 10 in Parks in Sunderland
Early in the 20th Century it was deemed necessary for some public open space to be provided in the west of the burgeoning town of Sunderland. The land was bought for £8,500 in 1904 and work for almost 3,000 men began in 1907.

Barnes Park was opened in August 1909 and served generations of Wearsiders for a century. By the turn of the millennium the park had fallen into neglect to such an extent the now city Council, with the Friends support, decided to mount a bid for Heritage Lottery Fund finance to refurbish the park. Success in 2009 saw the park close and work begin.

Phase One was completed in 2010 and the whole park reopened in May 2011. Much of the park was restored to original grandeur, but many new features, including a bridge over the lake, a sensory garden and a grand staircase have enhanced its attractions.
