Holy Trinity Church, Stratford-upon-Avon

Religious Site · Architectural Building
As the final resting place of Shakespeare, Holy Trinity Church stands as one of England's most-visited parish churches. Head out to the 15th-century chancel (space around the altar in the east end of a church) to see his grave and the funerary monument on the wall beside it. The church holds other significant attractions. In the nave of the church, look for the large medieval stained-glass windows and three-manual-pipe organ, which dates to 1841. Check out the Clopton Chapel, which holds the altar-tomb of 15th-century mayor Hugh Clopton. He led Stratford-Upon-Avon's early development but is actually buried in London. From the outside, you can simply admire the church. Except for the addition of a wooden spire in 1675, it's changed little since Shakespeare worshipped here. The church still holds services today; introduce yourself to the Welcome Team for guidance if you plan to attend one. • Due to COVID and the church only being open to private tours, we didn't go in the church but instead walked around the graveyard and sat on the bench outside it watching the river. Very cool to be so....  more »
  • The setting alongside the River Avon is very picturesque. The graves of the Shakespear family are centre stage right in front of the alter. A lovely example of a period church.  more »

  • A beautiful historic church contain the resting place of arguably the world's most famous playwright. William Shakespeare. A small extra charge allows you to walk up to the grave inside the church. The grave is simple, in marked contrast with the majestic surroundings of this beautiful church.
  • A beautiful and ancient building, housing Shakespeare's remains. Lovely guides who delight in being helpful. A quiet and calm retreat from every day cares.
