Anne Hathaway's Cottage & Gardens, Stratford-upon-Avon

4.4
#1 of 61 in Parks in Warwickshire
Set among extensive gardens, Anne Hathaway's Cottage & Gardens is located only 1.6 km (1 mi) from Shakespeare's birthplace. The house was passed down through the Hathaway family until 1846, but the family still lived there as tenants in 1892 when the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust acquired the property. Inside you'll see spacious rooms that have been redecorated to resemble what they may have looked like during the life of Anne Hathaway, William Shakespeare's wife. In the gardens, you'll find modern sculptures depicting Anne and Shakespeare's sad story. Save money by buying your tickets in a package that includes entry to all the Shakespeare sites in the area. Wear good walking shoes and consider walking between each site to enjoy the surrounding countryside. • This was the last attraction we came to see and was by far our favourite. Firstly because it is just so damn pretty, with it's thatched roof and lovely gardens. But also the staff were friendly and helpful and we were given with a lot of information as we went through the house. We got there on Saturday morning along with a school group of 50 American kids, but managed to whizz ahead so we could get photos without the crowds. I recommend taking the little woodland walk on the grounds as well, it only takes about 20 minutes and there isn't anything specific to see but it's just nice to be in nature. I like to imagine William and Anne walking around the woods and gardens all those centuries ago
  • I wish the tour could be arranged a bit better, like instead of forcing 30 people inside to _try_ and listen to all the explanations and stories, maybe divide it into 2, better yet, 3 groups to make everyone more comfortable. I definitely did not enjoy being rushed and since the place was tiny, it was very annoying to have to squeeze between other people just to try and listen. But the place itself looked well taken care of, authentic, and just an amazing experience all around.
