St Andrews Castle is a ruin located in the coastal Royal Burgh of St Andrews in Fife, Scotland. The castle sits on a rocky promontory overlooking a small beach called Castle Sands and the adjoining North Sea. There has been a castle standing at the site since the times of Bishop Roger (1189-1202), son of the Earl of Leicester. It housed the burgh’s wealthy and powerful bishops while St Andrews served as the ecclesiastical centre of Scotland during the years before the Protestant Reformation. In their Latin charters, the Archbishops of St Andrews wrote of the castle as their palace, signing, "apud Palatium nostrum."Add St Andrews Castle and other attractions to your St. Andrews trip itinerary using our St. Andrews trip planner.
The castle's grounds are now maintained by Historic Environment Scotland as a scheduled monument. The site is entered through a visitor centre with displays on its history. Some of the best surviving carved fragments from the castle are displayed in the centre, which also has a shop.

Always beautiful to go to S. Andrews and have a walk along the seafront, the village and the castle. Close to the sea and to the main street. We've visited it many times, inside as well, this time.... more »

Originally dating back to the 12th century, the Castle was rebuilt on several occasions, but the present ruin dates back to about 1400. Everything that a ruined Castle should be on a rocky... more »

Historic Castle has a gift shop and exhibition inside a separate building which you go through before going outside to the castle itself. Great on a sunny day as it has no roof and benches to relax on. Boards round the castle explain what the buildings were. You can climb up to higher levels and look out on the water. Upper levels are by metal stairs which are not suitable for disabled or infirm people however the main castle area could be accessed by wheelchair with assistance. A nice place to go and relax while in St Andrews. Entry fee is payable in the gift shop. £9 Adult, £5.40 Child under 5s free. Concesions £7.20. Young Scot card holders (worth getting) £1.

Interesting castle with great views of the coast. There's not a great deal left, but what's there is fascinating, particularly the mine and counter mines which are quite unique in my experience. Worth a visit, but a good look round will only take up a couple of hours at most.
