St Albans Cathedral owns the honor of being Britain's oldest site of continuous Christian worship. The Shrine of St Alban, where Britain's first martyr lies buried, is an important pilgrimage site receiving visitors since the 11th century. It boasts the longest nave of any cathedral in England, and at 84 m (276 ft) it is the second longest cathedral in the United Kingdom. Take part in a free guided tour to learn about the cathedral's history, architecture, and ministry. Tours begin at the west door and last an hour. If you have a limited schedule or prefer to learn the basics, a free highlights tour is faster. However, if you want to learn more about this historical site, the free "More to Explore" tour takes place on the first Sunday of each month.   • What a beautiful Cathedral. Mixture of the old and new. We were just aimlessly looking round and luckily one of the local guides asked if we had any questions ... which we did...then proceed to give us a magnificent little mini guided tour... thank you so much Ann for sharing. We will certainly visit again for one of the longer tours. Lovely little shop, restaurant.
  • Fan hotchpotch of a venerable place with many a Norman touch. Go for the superb brick and flint exterior, the fresco remains on the massive tiers, the astonishingly ornate Gothic or Perpendicular high altar and the ancient carved Greene Man in a niche. Think Durham but full of mellow light. Brilliant rose window with wacky tho' curiously harmonious c20 stained glass roundels. A must go! Second only in the region to the almighty Ely....
