Audley End House and Gardens Reviews
Super walk around the grounds, visit the house then go for a nice meal in the cafe. This is an English Heritage site. Lots of history. more »
Make sure you get at least a 2 for 1 deal as its about £18 per person and its not worth that. Decent enough gardens, house is ok (no photos? why? I nearly understand no flash but no photos at all?) At... more »
Audley End is just down the road from Cambridge and this was my first visit. It was quite early in the year, so the gardens weren't as colourful as they will be later in the year, nor was the house open, as such there are lovely walks around the grounds, the stables were open, with their horses and their own fire engine hose reel cart etc. The servants quarters were open, and that was fascinating, find a guide to tell you about the laundry room, dairy and kitchen. Talking of which the queue for the restaurant is appalling, why oh why is the queue for a full roast dinner the same as for those just wanting a tea or coffee and a snack. There are two dining areas and they really ought to separate the two. My advise is go in the summer, and take a picnic, with a blanket, and sit on the acres of grass that surrounds the house.
While pleasant, Audley End is definitely a recommended visit only on summer days. In the winter, it is quite easy to catch the grounds on an off day, with not much open and very few people around. This isn’t necessarily the fault of staff or English Heritage, but if possible your time will be best utilized when the sun is out and the main house is open. Otherwise, one is left with a not quite full appreciation for what is a very lovely place.
