The original Jacobean house was rebuilt by Thomas Watson-Wentworth, 1st Marquess of Rockingham (1693–1750), and vastly expanded by his son, the 2nd Marquess, who was twice Prime Minister, and who established Wentworth Woodhouse as a Whig centre of influence. In the 18th century, the house was inherited by the Earls Fitzwilliam who owned it until 1979, when it passed to the heirs of the 8th and 10th Earls, its value having appreciated from the large quantities of coal discovered on the estate.
Wentworth Woodhouse reviews
What a gem of a place! Took a day off work to visit here with friends and go on a guided tour of the house, and then enjoyed a picnic in the gardens. Reg was a fantastic guide and explained the... more »
Was expecting a grand house but turns out only the exterior facade is grand. Interiors are empty and dilapidated except for the hall which was superb. It would be better if they offered a sheet... more »
We took a tour inside the house which was about an hour long. It was fascinating to see the house in the process of restoration. Personally I loved seeing the torn wallpaper and the areas that have not yet been fully restored. Seeing the wear and damage was fascinating, though I know it will be amazing once it is all fixed up. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and provided us with a lot of history and current info as well. I do wish we could have walked through more rooms even if they have not been worked on yet. Maybe even providing photos or images of the rooms before restoration would enhance the tour. Not a cheap tour to do, but it is understandable to help this amazing house be restored. I would love to come back in future years to see the progress. Thank you for the lovely tour Wentworth Woodhouse! It is quite cool in the house even in summer, so I would suggest bringing a sweater or jacket if you are easily chilled. I will hold back some of my photos to keep some of it a surprise for your visit! Enjoy!
Wonderful to see such an iconic property being brought back to life. It's an important part of our industrial heritage. The volunteers do a magnificent job.
