Ripon Cathedral, Ripon

#2 of 32 in Things to do in Ripon
Church · Tourist Spot
Ripon Cathedral has provided religious services for almost 1,400 years, though the actual building was completed in 1547. The King of England destroyed the original structure in a feud with the Archbishop of York. Visit the crypt and chapel that remain from the original 7th century building, possibly the oldest place of continuous Christian worship in England. The well-maintained cathedral houses a wide variety of intricate woodwork, stonework, and stained glass, so take a moment to explore the interior. This is an active church that often has services and a live choir, but entrance is free and the staff is happy to show you around. • A wonderfully impressive edifice built by fantastically skilled craftsman in byegone years and all to the glory of God and our wonderful saviour Jesus. There is so much to admire and marvel at here. The wood carvings in particular are of such high quality and of the finest detail and they stand as testament to the dexterity and skill of those who formed and fashioned them all those centuries ago. Thanks be to God for this place and the devoted and dedicated people who have worked and worshipped here over several centuries. May more people be inspired to love and follow Jesus through inspiring places such as Ripon Cathedral. God's blessings to one and all.
  • This is perhaps my favourite cathedral in England, having visited quite a few of them. There is no entry charge, and no one at the door nagging you for cash. You are free to explore this wonderful place for what it is, the House of God. Of course, donations are appreciated if you enjoyed. I've been to two services here, and I feel that this is a cathedral I would love to visit regularly, it's just a shame I live so far away!! The people have all been very nice & this place is an all-round splendid experience.
