Okehampton Castle, Okehampton

4.4
The remains of the largest castle in Devon, in an outstandingly picturesque setting on a wooded spur above the rushing River Okement. Begun soon after the Norman Conquest it was converted into a sumptuous residence in the 14th centur. After the owner fell foul of Henry VIII in 1538, it declined into an allegedly haunted ruin. Riverside picnic area and woodland walks nearby.

  • Lovely ruins. Friendly staff at the ticket office the audio guide is very good and its free so worth it to help guide you round. The steps up to the very top are quite deep so if you have short legs they can be a bit tough
  • Loved our visit to Okehampton castle. The lady in the shop was very welcoming and helpful. The whole place had a great atmosphere about it and has a interesting history. Dogs are welcome and I would recommend getting the hand held tour guide. Their are plenty of benches to have a rest and lovely picnic benches by the river. I would really recommend people to go and have a visit.
