Gylen Castle Reviews
We took the short hop by ferry from Oban to Kerrera and walked to the south of the island to this marvellous spot. It’s a fantastic sight, in an atmospheric spot with impressive views of the coastline... more »
What a stunning place. Not to much of a trek and the ferry is very cheap. We were extremely fortunate to have a stunning day weather wise which made this all the better. Highly recommend the cafe/rest... more »
Took the ferry over from Oban (if you're taking the ferry they only take 12 at a time so sit close to the ferry landing so you are first to board). The walk to the castle is about an hour each way. Highly suggest bringing water and hiking boots - it can get muddy. Awesome scenery so be prepared to take lots of pictures - especially from the castle as it sits really high up on a "cliff" with lots of stunning views. Right before you reach the castle there is a cafe where you can take a break, grab a bite to eat and enjoy some coffee/tea while checking out the views. There's a toilet on the trail to the castle, which is right near the cafe. Its a compost toilet so it stinks. The last ferry leaves at 5pm, so keep that in mind when planning your day. From what I have heard they will make a trip back to get you if your late, but i wouldnt risk it. Overall a great hike with awesome views. Highly recommend checking it out if staying in Oban.
Absolutely stunning location and interesting castle with a very welcome cafe after 1 hour walk from the ferry. Brilliant and will be back.
