Trip Planner: Europe / UK / England / Nottinghamshire / Nottingham / Nottingham Castle Museum & Art Gallery
Once the main residence of the duke, Nottingham Castle Museum & Art Gallery is considered the city of Nottingham's best art gallery. The gallery got international attention when it hosted the "Waking Dreams" exhibition of Pre-Raphaelite art. In the permanent collection, you'll find watercolors by Paul Sandby, Wedgwood Jasperware, locally made salt-glazed stoneware, oil paintings, and a group of costumes that showcase locally made lace. All of these works of art are housed inside the castle's exquisitely preserved architecture, one of the rare examples of Artisan Mannerist style. Take a guided tour through the remaining rock-cut cellars, following a long passage that leads to the bottom of the rock that the castle rests on, known as Mortimer's Hole. We went for the jousting and annual show, a great day out for children and adults alike. Could not be faulted in anyway, does get extremely busy so leave plenty of time to nose around the stalls, watch the displays and join in the numerous and sometimes quite fascinating interactive facilities, extremely informative about day to day living, weaponry, archery, cooking, food stuffs you name it!. Stepped in history and legends…. one for the bucket list!
Massive castle grounds and the museum is amazing. One could really get lost in the beauty and history around them. It really is a sight to see. Although book a full day for it because it really takes some time to do. But its worth every minuite in there. The cave tour is also very much worth the visit.
