Forth Bridge, North Queensferry

#8 of 391 in Things to do in Fife
Forth Bridge, a cantilever railway bridge over the Firth of Forth, is a popular tourist destination for travelers worldwide. It is sometimes referred to as the Forth Rail Bridge to distinguish it from the Forth Road Bridge, though this has never been an official title. Plans are in action to build a visitor’s center as well as a viewing platform at the top of the bridge. Soon, you may be able to walk up the track to the southern tower, 100 m (330 ft) above sea level. This bridge has also been featured regularly in popular culture. You can find it in the film The 39 Steps by Alfred Hitchcock, in the novel The Bridge by Iain Banks, in various advertisements, and even in the video game Grand Theft Auto. • We went to a place where you can see all 3 bridges at once. Three bridges from three different centuries that spawn the same body of water. One is rail, the other is now only used for buses and the ne...  more »
  • This is a place I've known about since I was a small boy. It really is a feat engineering excellence. This was built without modern machinery. To see it is something else, if you do get the opportunity then please cross the bridge by train to Queensferry. Walk down to the waters edge and marvel at this superb structure.
  • Probably the most amazing bridge in the world. It has a warm place in the heart of very many Scots. The views are different from North and South Queensferry but when you're directly underneath it you get an appreciation for the sheer size of the bridge, and the engineering marvel it is. Taking a train across it is another experience but to be honest you don't see an awful lot.
