The Tyne Bridge, Newcastle upon Tyne

Officially opened in 1928, The Tyne Bridge is the most celebrated of the seven bridges that link Newcastle upon Tyne and Gateshead across the River Tyne. The bridge has become such an icon of Newcastle that it's displayed on the logo of the popular Newcastle Brown Ale. Be sure to bring your camera along, as the bridge makes an ideal photo opportunity. A keen eye might spot some similarities between the Tyne Bridge and the Sydney Harbour Bridge in Australia, as they were designed by the same engineering firm, with Sydney Harbour Bridge built just three years later. The Tyne Bridge is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our international travel planner, Newcastle upon Tyne Edition.

  • The Tyne Bridge is worth walking over as you get great views of the Quayside plus of the other bridges. It’s also fascinating to see it from below, as you walk along the quayside. This is the classic green arch bridge of Newcastle and the Tyne. Built in the 1920s, a walk across this bridge gives great views of the other bridges up and down the river. Equally good are the views of this bridge from the Quayside.
  • I love this bridge. And all the others on the Tyne. Wish I could climb it, like you can the Sydney harbour bridge. But for now, just admire and find out how it was built. An incredible feat of engineering. Ps. Watch out for the birds if you walk under it!
