  • This memorial shows George Stephenson in a thoughtful pose, with four figures seated at the corners of the base around the great man. Two of the figures are classically inspire and the other two are dressed like 19th century gentlemen. Either way the basic theme is engineering and philosophy. One of the figures is an engineer resting with a model of a steam engine on his lap, while another muscular and classically-robed, are blacksmith with an anvil and possibly a miner.
  • This Monument was erected to celebrate the inventor of the steam locomotive, except he didn't ☺. You can justly argue that he invented the first commercial steam locomotive and that he set the world standard for the rail gauge but he didn't invent the steam locomotive. 😊 While old George is best remembered for his railway engineering skills he was not a one trick pony as they say tiday. He also invented a glass tube to hang up in his green house to force cucumbers to grow straight ☺. He also had a keen interest in many other science fields, he was known to ask his guests for a sample of their blood so he could study them under his microscope. Not bad for someone with no formal education. The nearest car park is situated within the Central Railway Stations grounds. A short walk from there brings you to the Monument itself. Nearest toilets are inside the Railway Station and they are wheelchair friendly.
