Sweetheart Abbey, New Abbey

A 13th-century Cistercian monastery now in ruins, Sweetheart Abbey nevertheless testifies to the romantic story behind its founding. In 1275 the abbey was built in honor of the late John Balliol by his widow, Dervorguilla of Galloway. Upon Dervorguilla's death, her husband's embalmed heart was buried alongside her in a silver casket, and the abbey was renamed for this act of love. Walk the grounds and view the remains of the abbey, keeping an eye out for the stone effigy of Lady Dervorgilla in the south transept--a 16th-century replica of the original. The precinct wall of massive marble boulders ranks among the most complete in Scotland. • What a beautiful and atmospheric abbey. Even with the repairs going on you could feel the past. Very beaytiful.  more »
  • Dear TripAdvisor  It is not actually closed as such just you can only view it from outside the safety barriers and not enter the ruins.  Regards  Simon   more »
  • We spent a delightful day here on a lovely sunny day. The information boards all around the abbey were so helpful in learning about the history and take lots of photos. The little cafe was excellent with some delicious home made food and cakes were yummy. Definitely worth a visit.
  • Interesting place to visit, although much of it is cordoned off currently due to falling masonry risks. The adjacent graveyard is fascinating to walk through and there are good views of the Abbey from there also. Free parking nearby & toilets in the car park too
