Trafalgar Square, London

#31 of 3,732 in Things to do in London
One of London’s most recognizable landmarks, Trafalgar Square is a 44 m (145 ft) high monument bearing the statue of Lord Horatio Nelson, whose distinguished service during the Napoleonic Wars secured him a reputation as one of Britain’s most heroic historical figures. The square, built around the area formerly known as Charing Cross, marks the center of the city. A number of commemorative statues and sculptures are located on the square, with one plinth (statue platform) left empty in order to host regular art exhibits. The square is used for political events and community gatherings, and most notably is the center of the city’s New Year’s Eve celebrations. Try to make a photo stop here while you're in town. • I didn't find it anything special. Just a busy square with a lot of traffic around it. It was also a rainy day. Probably nicer to sit next to the fountain on a sunny day after walking through the city  more »
  • Todays protest was about climate change, this will be ongoing for the next week and a half. everyone is in good spirit. worth the visit!  more »

  • Very cool plaza. Located in front of a museum with beautiful statues and a gigantic fountain with a pillar in the middle. You can find many artists performing there too, anything from dancing to painting in the floor or impersonating a celebrity. It's also near to the city center and has a good connection to public transport
  • Impressive square. Lots of street artists (at least in the summer). A place to have your midday stop (coffee and snack) during your tour of London. The Lions surrounding Nelson are impressive. The Trafalgar sea battle maintained the naval supremacy of Britain and allowed her to resist against Napoleon. Don't forget to visit the National Gallery!
