The Goldsmiths Company, London
Founded to regulate the craft or trade of the goldsmith, the Goldsmiths' Company has been responsible since 1300 for testing the quality of gold, silver and from 1975 platinum articles. In 2010 Palladium was brought into this regime. The word Hallmark originates from the fifteenth century when London craftsmen were first required to bring their artefacts to the Goldsmiths' Hall for assaying and marking. This requirement continues unchanged today and the company still carries out it's statutory function through the operations of The Goldsmiths Company Assay Office.Plan to see The Goldsmiths Company and other attractions that appeal to you using our London trip app .

The oldest Assay Office in the UK - Goldsmiths have been assessing and stamping precious metals for 700 years! Here are a few photos from the interior. The Vulliamy longcase clock is enormous. The sculpture is King Edward III, who established the maker’s mark in 1363. But it was Henry III in 1238 who made the earliest attempt at regulating the standard of gold and silver wares. Fraud has been happening since time immemorial!
The place where hallmarks are given to pieces of silver and gold. There are annual, two week long Fairs held in Foster Lane, City of London, usually September/October, where member artisans display their latest designs - very well worth a visit.
