St John’s, listed Grade II*, was designed by James Brooks in the 1870s and built between 1874 and 1911.

Passers-by can easily miss this truly magnificent church, jammed as it is between houses on a busy thoroughfare. While the carved portico of the west door may hint at treasures beyond, nothing prepares the first-time visitor for the elaborately decorated interior. Beautifully carved stone statues adorn the pulpit, angels fly out over the pews, and stained glass windows carry the eye up to the elaborately vaulted ceiling. The altar offers a tableau depicting the history of the church from its beginnings to 1905, a time illustrated by a carving of the then Bishop of London. Only the highest standards of craftsmanship were used to decorate the church, which Pevsner described as “tall, cool and vaulted, like a fragment of a cathedral.”

Today St John's is home to two congregations, Anglican and Eritrean Orthodox. We have an active programme of concerts and other events, and have space to hire. We are currently raising funds to redevelop the building to meet the needs of the 21st century, starting with a new roof.
