Royal Observatory Greenwich, London

World heritage site · Observatory · Hidden Gem · Historic Site
At Royal Observatory Greenwich, see where the world established 0 degrees longitude. More than just the home of the prime meridian, the observatory serves as a museum containing artifacts from its time as a center for the study of navigation. Keep an eye out for the world's first marine chronometers and the UK's largest refracting telescope, which was made in 1893. The observatory also puts on art exhibits with maritime and astronomy themes, and hosts a 120-seat planetarium. Make sure you bring your camera, as you'll have views of London's Canary Wharf from here. • GMT is based around this observatory. You can get your picture taken as you stand aside the meridian line by a loved one if you are the type who likes those pushing up the leaning tower style pictures. There is a gift shop and a museum. The ground are lovely and expansive. Visit via the Thames Taxi for a real family experience.
  • A great place to visit for the views if nothing else! You can see a lot without paying but to see the some of the older telescopes and the Harrison clocks you'll need to pay. Other buildings contain lots of hands on activities for the children but a number were simply not working the day we visited.
