Crystal Palace National Sports Centre, London
The National Sports Centre at Crystal Palace in south London, England is a large sports centre and athletics stadium. It was opened in 1964 in Crystal Palace Park, close to the site of the former Crystal Palace Exhibition building which had been destroyed by fire in 1936, and is on the same site as the former FA Cup Final venue which was used here between 1895 and 1914.Plan a London trip in moments using our itinerary builder.
It was one of the five National Sports Centres, run on behalf of Sport England, but responsibility was transferred to the London Development Agency (now GLA Land and Property) and is managed by Greenwich Leisure Limited, under their Better brand logo.
The sports centre building was designed by the LCC Architects Department under Sir Leslie Martin between 1953–54 and is a Grade II* listed building. It has a particularly interesting interior: there is a central concourse with a complex and delicate exposed concrete frame supporting the roof, which has a folded teak lining, and to one side a series of pools, including a 50m competition pool, and a diving pool with a dramatic reinforced concrete diving platform, and to the other side a smaller sports arena.

Large campus in the centre of a sprawling park. Excellent facilities for both indoor and outdoor sports. Regularly hosts national and international championships. Encourages sports for ones as young as 6 months onwards including swimming and diving training, free tennis for the young, indoor rock climbing etc with multiple changing rooms, snacks area and parents viewing gallery. For the more sports minded there are indoor facilities for squash, badminton, volleyball, judo, basketball, cycling, gym and outdoor facilities for football, tennis, hockey, and other athletic pursuations. Nearby there are jogging tracks used regularly by the park run participants. Young children can avail of a play area with various slides & rides, or enjoy viewing the dinosaurs while walking around with family. There is also a boating lake within the park though not associated with the sports centre. Ample parking is another plus but you can easily reach the centre by train or bus from London proper / suburbs.
So lucky to have access to this wonderful facility, so close to home! Really affordable membership fees and such fantastic fitness instructors make it worthwhile! I can see how many families and community members rely on this space for their wellbeing - I hope that plans will be put in place to reinvest in this critical community centre!
