ArcelorMittal Orbit, London
The ArcelorMittal Orbit is the winning entry to a competition organised by the Greater London Authority to design an accessible work of public art that would be an iconic centre-piece for the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. It is designed by Anish Kapoor and Cecil Balmond. The ArcelorMittal Orbit is a landmark sculpture, showcasing the versatility and strength of steel, it is located within the site of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, of which ArcelorMittal is a Tier Two supporter.Put ArcelorMittal Orbit into our London trip planner to see other points of interest to visit during your vacation in London.
The ArcelorMittal Orbit is 114.5 metres tall, with two observation decks, at 80m and 76m. At least 60% of the steel used in the Orbit, which comes from ArcelorMittal's facilities around the world, is recycled from scrap. There are lifts to go up for everyone, and down too for those that need them, although visitors are encouraged to walk down, using the spiral staircase. Situated on the Olympic Park between the Stadium and the Aquatics Centre, the ArcelorMittal Orbit is the UK's tallest sculpture.
The realisation of the Kapoor and Balmond vision has been made possible by Arup whose engineers and technical experts are experienced in major artistic collaborations. Ushida Findlay Architects has completed the design and seamless integration of the architectural elements of the sculpture, including the visitor staircase that winds around the ArcelorMittal Orbit.
The ArcelorMittal Orbit was completed and handed over to the London Legacy Development Corporation in May 2012. The London Organising Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) will operate the ArcelorMittal Orbit in the summer of 2012. After a period of transformation, the Legacy Company is expected to then re-open the ArcelorMittal Orbit as a visitor attraction within the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.
ArcelorMittal Orbit Reviews
Fantastic rush - what a ride. It's fast, surprising and worth every penny. Not for people with claustrophobia, it's a tight space. more »
Horkerig personeel liet ons wachten tot ons tijdslot terwijl er vrijwel niemand was. Na een uur wachten het Bericht dat de lift kapot was, en dat er een refund komt. Dankjewel orbit, 3 uur Londen tijd... more »Horkerig staff let us wait for our time slot while there was virtually no one. After an hour, the message that the lift was broken, and that a refund is coming. Thank you orbit, 3 hours London time messed up
This was absolutely amazing! I would definitely go again. However, it wasn’t as fast as it made it seem so there is no need to be scared or get worked up about it being scary because it goes at a nice reasonable speed. The staff are absolutely lovely and very helpful, there is also a little gift shop which has lovely little things like pens, pencils, note pads and things to remember it by. I would highly recommend this as it was very fun and an awesome experience 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
When you go up with the lift and you are waiting for your turn it is a bit scary, cause you can see everything at the bottom, people are like ants, and you think, the slide is going to be a few seconds and I am really high. The good thing is that you wear all your protections, the helmet (that is not making you look nice at all) and you lie in a kind of platform. I don´t want to be a spoiler but it is not that bad. My recommendation is to enjoy the view once you get to the top and enjoy your way down on the slide. I think is that kind of experience I won´t repeat again but it is worth it trying it. I really enjoyed it.
