Apsley House, London

4.5
#40 of 250 in Museums in London
The London home of the Dukes of Welllington, Apsley House now functions as a museum and art gallery run by English Heritage. Built in the 18th century, the house represents possibly the only example of an English aristocratic townhouse from the period. The heritage museum contains a collection of 200 paintings, including works by Velazquez and Rubens. Eighty-three of the paintings were gathered as part of a looting of Joseph Bonaparte's baggage train following the Battle of Vitoria. Admire the grandeur of the stately home, and if you're lucky, you might catch a sighting of the ninth Duke of Wellington, who still resides here from time to time. Planning London trip won't be overwheling when you use's Insprock itinerary maker.

  • Visit interesting and not as well known as others in London, the home of the famous Hero of Waterloo, the Duke of Wellington. Visit the rooms of the first floor and part of the ground floor, preserved and decorated as in the time of Duke and you can see the famous collection of Spanish paintings that according to they say, Fernando VII of Spain prevented him from returning when he rescued her from the hands of José Bonapa RTE. Audioguide in Spanish and moderate price. Recommended.

  • Grandiose, packed full of history, well preserved and presented with talks or audio visual guides this is a slice of history and art to entertain, amaze ,and imagine.... and the art is beautiful and you can get up and close to admire!
  • I visited the home of the Duke of Wellington in London and I have to say the house and staff are extremely brilliant. Both Martin and Aurora, (English Heritage staff) were really helpful and were able to tell so much knowledge about the history of the Duke and his life. There’s no inside images on this review as photography isn’t permitted 😐
