A privately owned monument, Llansteffan Castle sits on a steep promontory and overlooks the estuary of the Towy River. Dating back to the 12th century, the castle was a stronghold for the princes of Deheubarth and later the Normans. After being neglected for years, the monument passed into state care in the 1950s.     Best castle ruins I've ever been to. A steep walk up, but we'll worth it for ruins that can be explored, including climbing spiral staircases and seeing the portcullis slots and murder holes! Not to mention the most breathtaking views over green hills to the one side and sparkling diamond ocean to the other.

    I've never seen such an extensive castle layout and the information boards around gave a real picture of how this castle was used. Full marks to the folk who keep this open, which is great to visit and learn from. The views from the top are brilliant too (see the pictures attached).
