Billed as one of the best conservation zoos in England, the wild inhabitants of South Lakes Safari Zoo reside on 6.9 hectares (17 acres) of land designed to help them feel right at home. The highlight is the African section, which is split into different enclosures. A pair of pygmy hippopotamuses and a slue of mandrills occupy one. In another, you'll see white rhinoceroses, baboons, and giraffes. Hundreds of other species populate other enclosures spread throughout the park. Pay a visit to Maki Restaurant for a bite to eat, and grab a seat on the restaurant's deck for a view of the rhinos, giraffes, and baboons. South Lakes Safari Zoo Reviews
We decided to take the little one to the zoo to have a family day. We had the idea of taking a picnic with us as my daughter loves having a picnic (shes only 3)but on arrival we noticed a sign saying ... more »
We turned up 2 what we thought was a farm until we walked through the door and then seen how big it actually was,its an amazing place and to be able to walk through most of the enclosures next to the ... more »
This is a great zoo, we had a really fun day with our 2 year old. The keepers were great and there were a variety of animals who all seemed happy and well cared for. The giraffe feed was amazing, we all loved it! Well worth the extra money. In fact we fed the giraffes twice as well as the penguins! The downside was the warning signs everywhere. And I mean everywhere. "DON'T BRING FOOD INTO THE ZOO", "DON'T CLIMB ON THIS", "USE THE HAND DRYER FOR A MAXIMUM OF 10 SECONDS!" with constant threats of getting kicked out if you don't comply. Not having any food at all was difficult with our young child, they could relax on that rule a little. We understand that it's a bad idea to have a biscuit in your hand when walking through the enclosures but no food in the zoo at all!? It seems way too strict to me. There are picnic benches we could have used at no harm to anyone. Instead we had to trek back to have lunch in our car (walking PAST the dozens of picnic tables in the zoo).
Was a brilliant day, paid for the big cat experience. It was amazing!! Michael the zoo keeper, was very friendly and knowledgeable. few wasps, but that can not be helped as it's an outdoor activity. If you can't handle it, stay indoors. But I would definitely go again. A day we will never forget, we are already planning our next trip. We got to see all the animals, and we chose to feed the penguins and giraffes on the day. We thought everything was a decent price. I mean they have to make money to keep the zoo going after all. Overall very impressed. Well done South lakes zoo. Keep up the good work.
