The Bishop's Palace, Kirkwall is a 12th-century palace built at the same time as the adjacent St Magnus Cathedral in the centre of Kirkwall, Orkney, Scotland. It housed the cathedral's first bishop, William the Old of the Norwegian Catholic church who took his authority from the Archbishop of Nidaros (Trondheim). The ruined structure now looks like a small castle.

  • Brilliant site by Historic Scotland. As ever their staff are so much better and informative than National Trust. Well maintained sites and so close to the centre and St Magnus cathedral.  more »

  • Understated from afar but worth visiting. You will be taken back in time I a very personal and genuine manner. All you need is a dry day.
  • Two excellent buildings, ruins - depending on how you see them. Adjacent to St Magnus cathedral. Well presented by Historic Scotland, many sings and labels to help understand the use of the various parts of the buildings.
