Sizergh Castle, Kendal

4.3
Gifted to the National Trust in 1950 but still inhabited by the Strickland family, Sizergh Castle houses a 14th-century solar tower surrounded by a Tudor house. Admire the Elizabethan oak-paneled interiors, inlaid chamber, period furniture and centuries-old portraits. Explore the seven-hectare Dutch garden, which includes a pond, lake, a national collection of ferns and the largest limestone rock garden belonging to the National Trust. Try to spot a Hawfinch, an elusive bird best seen in winter and spring. View the night sky unobstructed by light pollution from Church Fell and browse the gift shop and plant sales before you go. Check for events online in advance. There is 142 mi (229 km) of parking. Put Sizergh Castle at the forefront of your travel plans using our Kendal visit site .

  • It looks beautiful and plenty to see however very little of it is accessible with a pram. Also the website is out of date and they do not hire baby slings. The staff were friendly and the cafe looked nice. The grounds were well maintained and had we been able to access it I'm sure would have been lovely.
  • Always a delight to visit, even if it's only to stroll in the park or gardens. If you're feeling like a real leg stretch there are some good trails to follow, many with magnificent views. The shop and cafe complex is very pleasant and the food is simple but very tasty. Some very interesting birds in the vicinity of the cafe and car park.
