Trip Planner: Europe / UK / Scotland / The Hebrides / Outer Hebrides / Lewis and Harris / Isle of Lewis / Norse Mill and Kiln
Travel back in time to the age when Vikings ruled the Scottish isles at Norse Mill and Kiln. Instead of telling stories of pillage and destruction, these two restored structures represent a great example of ancient technology that has been used since the Iron Age. Thanks to its numerous streams, the Isle of Lewis was once the home of hundreds of mills. Today this historical mill and the adjacent kiln for drying the grain serve as monuments of this bygone era. From their stone walls and thatched roofs to the interiors equipped with authentic grinding equipment and restored fire pits, the mill and the kiln look just as they did hundreds of years ago. Park your car in the lot nearby. Make Norse Mill and Kiln part of your personalized Isle of Lewis itinerary using our Isle of Lewis travel route planner.

Fantastically preserved and maintained site, showing how they would have been used - completely open to explore - not a far walk from the small car park - it's very exposed trail so if the weather is wild (like on our trip) you've got nowhere to hide until you get to the Mill House and Kiln.
Atmospheric and otherworldly, fantastic reconstruction.
