Chambercombe Manor, Ilfracombe

4.5
Chambercombe Manor is a Norman manor house located near Ilfracombe, Devon, which dates back to the 11th century and was recorded in the Domesday Book. It is said to be one of the most haunted buildings in the United Kingdom.
The Manor was owned by the Champernon family until the 15th century, when it passed through various families until 1979 when it was donated to the Chambercombe Manor Trust. The house lost its status as an estate at some point, and for a long time it was used as a farmhouse. However, it did not lose its former grandeur during this period, and today the manor is open to the public. The house contains eight period rooms available to view, ranging from Elizabethan to Victorian.

  • Warning - coffee here only comes with milk! Cream Tea OK, tea cakes a little anaemia, but service very disappointing. There are better options in Ilfracombe.  more »

  • This manor house is steeped in history, dating back to the Domesday book and with loads of very old furniture. Whilst I personally didn't encounter any spirits or ghosts I'm sure they are there. Our guide was brilliant , very amusing and full of interesting facts. The tea rooms are lovely, I can recommend the carrot cake. The tours are guided, at set times . Car parking is right by the manor, but it fills up quickly. Definitely recommend, even if you're not a ghost hunter !
  • Lovely place, both the house and the surrounding. It's well taken care for and you can easily spend a couple of hours enjoying the peace of the gardens. It's very interesting the history of it and well explained by the tour guide. No doubt there are presences in there. We were certain of it. Something different worth going. There is also a small coffee shop where you can have some drinks and sandwiches or sweets. Nothing much and not a big choice but enough. We've enjoyed it.
