Must see · History Museum · Museum
One of Europe’s most important archaeological sites, Vindolanda was a Roman auxiliary fort just south of Hadrian’s Wall. Located near the modern village of Bardon Mill, the fort once guarded the Stanegate, the Roman road from the River Tynne to the Solway Firth. The site is noted for numerous wooden writing tablets, which are among the most significant finds of military and private correspondence discovered anywhere in the Roman Empire. Stop by the on-site museum to see what Roman life was like at the very edge of the great empire over 2,000 years ago. The museum conserves and displays finds from the excavation site, such as boots, shoes, armor, jewelry, coins, and a small selection of the famous tablets. Make Vindolanda a centerpiece of your Hexham vacation itinerary, and find what else is worth visiting using our Hexham road trip tool.
