The remains of a Roman barrack block, Housesteads Roman Fort - Hadrian's Wall is a symmetrical stone wall ruin that rests high on Hadrian's Wall. Inside are the remains of a Roman toilet and partitioning walls that divided the structure into rooms. The massive stone structures protected over 800 Roman soldiers while they were stationed at the site. The fortress provides panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. A nearby museum offers a model of the intact structure and a history of the Romans in England. • This is said to be the most complete Roman fort in Europe. I can't verify that claim, but there is a lot to see here. We did visit another Roman fort ruin near Hardknott Pass in Cumbria. Some of the f...  more »

  • Very interesting! The variety of buildings combined with the museum with artifacts & 6min video (while seated), & view down onto Hadrian's wall & the beautiful countryside, made the long walk up hill worthwhile. There's also a bench at the top & picnic tables at the entrance. The playground just inside the ticketed area looks like fun, but my kids were too tired after the walk to even think about climbing the slide. The walk through sheep fields also afforded us a chance to feel the discarded Tufts of wool & compare them to our merino wool back home. All the staff seemed friendly.
  • Great opportunity to see ancient(123 A.D.) history up close! There are many informative signs. It is at the top of a hill, so not everybody would be able to walk up. It is worth the walk though! Great scenic views. Good for all ages.
