The remains of a Roman barrack block, Housesteads Roman Fort - Hadrian's Wall is a symmetrical stone wall ruin that rests high on Hadrian's Wall. Inside are the remains of a Roman toilet and partitioning walls that divided the structure into rooms. The massive stone structures protected over 800 Roman soldiers while they were stationed at the site. The fortress provides panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. • We were disappointed that this attraction as advertised as National Trust, with whom we are members, only to find the site is managed y English Heritage. There fore it would have cost us £18 to walk.....  more »
  • We made a day trip from Newcastle. We got the train to Hexham, then the AD122 bus. It is a bit of a walk from the car park, but worth it for the site and to walk along the wall.  more »

  • This is a good place to visit, even in the pouring rain (as we had). The little museum and film is very interesting, and gives great context to the ruins you can explore, and how they would have looked and been used. We enjoyed the view of Hadrian's wall stretching out on either side of the fort, and the various information plaques around the fort with more information about each section. A really great look into that part of British history! Staff were friendly and helpful, as always at this kind of attraction throughout the UK.
  • We couldn't have picked a worst day to visit weather wise so we didn't take full advantage of our visit. There is so much history here. The information is easily absorbed and interesting. There is a slightly hilly walk to get to the fort and wall from the car park. It's good paths and the staff are friendly and will explain everything
