Castle Crag, Grange-in-Borrowdale

#1 of 7 in Things to do in Borrowdale
Explore the origins of the historic valley by hiking to Castle Crag, the lowest of the fells on the Wainwright listing. Rising just about 290 m (951 ft) above sea level, the hill features the remains of an Iron Age hill fort. Three faces of the rugged fell are steep and all sides have been comprehensively excavated. Follow the steep winding path to the summit, which is topped with a WWI memorial. The views from the top expand over the flat valley, which used to be covered by a lake during the Ice Age. • Very good walking path, steep and rocky in places, but it was still good, and very scenic. Recommend  more »
  • Attractive small Lake District fell. Actually the smallest in the Wainwright guides. Still a tough but short scramble to the summit. Lots of dangerous drops and crags so be careful! Nice walk (about 4 miles) round the bottom from Rosthwaite or Grange. Good views from the top down Borrowdale.
  • Stunning! Not too steep a walk with breathtaking views all round. Good for a gentle trip out or as part of a longer hike no matter the age.
