Winkworth Arboretum, Godalming

4.5
Winkworth Arboretum is a National Trust-owned arboretum in the spread-out civil parish of Busbridge between Godalming and Hascombe, south-west Surrey, England.

The 95 acres (38 ha) arboretum was founded by Dr Wilfrid Fox, starting in 1938 and continuing through World War 2. He cleared the land and planted it with carefully chosen trees and shrubs to maximise its autumnal appearance. Once it was established, he presented it to the National Trust in 1952.
Winkworth Arboretum exhibits over 1000 species of trees as well as large collections of azalea, rhododendron, and holly on slopes leading down to landscaped garden lakes. Gertrude Jekyll explored the woods in the early 20th century.

  • Our National Trust membership has allowed us to explore this gorgeous arboretum across all the seasons. The play-wood has two areas to explore and are accessible for toddlers through to older children. The cafe provides a great range of snacks and lunches at a reasonable place including kids lunchboxes (vegetarian options but no vegan when we visited) but staff were helpful for allowing us to swap items for a dairy allergy.
  • This is simply a fabulous place! The boathouse is a great and provided there are no children, it offers a very tranquil place to relax in front of the lake, with comfortable couches… a bit dirty though! Definitely a place to go back to and a place to spend a lot of time walking around the many paths.
