St Mary de Crypt Church, Gloucester

#4 of 16 in Historic Sites in Gloucester
Church · Tourist Spot
At St Mary de Crypt Church, visit the classroom of one of the first Tudor grammar schools and the grave of the creator of Sunday schools, Robert Raikes. Since its founding in the 12th century, the church has played an important role in the lives of its parishioners. See the renaissance pulpit from which the 18th-century Evangelist George Whitfield--who brought Methodism to America--preached for the first time. The altar space features a medieval fresco depicting the magi bearing gifts. Apart from the church and the crypt, you can also tour the ringing chamber; the bell tower houses eight 18th-century bells.
